Channels of legal immigration

Most countries admit immigrants through a few channels: skilled work, study, family, investment and humanitarian protection. The channel decides how long processing takes, what language and money requirements apply, and whether it leads to citizenship.

Comparing routes across countries is useful because a closed door in one system often has an open counterpart elsewhere, such as the UK Global Talent visa for a stalled US petition.

Immigrant visas and permanent residence differ from temporary statuses in that they set no end date for the stay. Most systems score candidates on age, education, language, work experience and a job offer, and Canada and Australia formalise this in points systems. Family immigration depends on the sponsor's status, since citizens can usually sponsor a wider circle of relatives than permanent residents. Humanitarian statuses such as asylum offer protection, but the road from them to citizenship is longer and varies by country.
