Study as a route to residence

A student visa lets you study and usually work limited hours, but it requires enrolment, proof of funds and a genuine intention to study, which Australia assesses under a separate requirement.

Many countries let graduates move onto a work permit and later permanent residence, so the choice of country and programme should account for the next step. Coverage includes admission after secondary school, master's programmes, documents and students' first-hand accounts.

Admission usually requires a translated and certified school or university diploma, a language certificate such as IELTS, TOEFL or a local-language exam, and a motivation letter. At many public universities in Europe, including in Germany, Czechia and Poland, study in the local language is free or much cheaper than in English. Proof of funds is shown with bank statements, a scholarship or a sponsor letter, and the required amount differs by country. After graduation, Canada offers the open PGWP, the UK the Graduate visa, and EU countries a job-search permit of at least nine months.
