The ladder to permanent status

Permanent status abroad is usually built in steps: a visa, a temporary residence permit, permanent residency and finally citizenship. At each step the state checks lawful stay and income, and before naturalization it tests language and civic knowledge.

Citizenship comes by naturalization after years of residence, by descent through ancestors, or by birth on the country's soil, and the rules differ sharply. A recurring question is whether time spent under temporary protection counts for Ukrainians and how to switch to an ordinary permit.

Temporary permits are usually issued for one to five years and tied to a basis such as work, study, family or investment. In the EU, five years of lawful residence can lead to long-term resident status; Canada's economic programs grant permanent residence directly, and US green cards come through family, an employer or personal achievement. Naturalization in Europe takes five to ten years of residence, and not every country permits dual citizenship. A missed renewal, a long absence or unauthorised work can break the residence period, so these risks are covered separately.
