Global Talent is a UK immigration route for leaders and emerging leaders in academia, research, arts and culture, and digital technology. It replaced the Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa in February 2020. It needs no employer sponsor or job offer, so holders can be employed, self-employed or switch jobs freely.
Most applicants go through two stages: an endorsement from a recognised endorsing body, such as Arts Council England for the arts or the Royal Society for science, followed by the visa application to the Home Office. Endorsement is assessed at two levels, exceptional talent for established leaders and exceptional promise for those earlier in their careers. Some applicants skip the endorsement stage through a major prize or an eligible fellowship or research post. The level matters later, because exceptional talent usually allows an earlier application for indefinite leave to remain than exceptional promise. The route is unrelated to the Bureau of Global Talent Management, the US State Department's human resources office.
