How residency rights work

Residency means the legal right to live in a country beyond a visitor stay, usually confirmed by a residence permit tied to a specific route such as work, study, investment or remote work. Temporary residence is renewed on the conditions of that route, while permanent residence removes most of them; citizenship is a separate step with its own residence and language requirements.

In Spain, remote workers can apply for the digital nomad permit created by Law 28/2022, known as the Startup Law. Approval is only the start: the holder then gives fingerprints at a police office to receive the TIE card and registers their address with the town hall through empadronamiento.

In the UK, Global Talent applicants first need an endorsement from a recognised body, such as Arts Council England for artists, before the Home Office decides the visa. Qualifying UK routes can lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain and then naturalisation as a British citizen. Many international graduates in Australia move from the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) to points-tested skilled visas, where the nominated occupation decides eligibility.
